Saturnino (Cuadrado) Escalera (born December 1, 1929 in
    Santurce, Puerto Rico
    ) is a former
    outfielder
    and
    first baseman
    in
    Major League Baseball
    who played for the
    Cincinnati Redlegs
    in the 1954 season.
    He started his
    baseball
career at a very young age, often playing with his brothers and neighbors from the Loiza Street in
    Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico
    .
In 1946 at the Amateur Baseball World Series held in the Latin American Republic of Colombia Escalera was named best first baseman and most valuable player (MVP) of the tournament.
    In 1950, the
    New York Yankees
    organization obtained Escalera from the
    Bristol Owls
    of the
    Colonial League
. In 1952, he was purchased by the
    Toledo Mud Hens
    -
    Charleston Senators
    of the
    American Association
, and later that year, by the
    Cincinnati Redlegs
    organization.
On April 17, 1954 at the Milwaukee's County Stadium, a 24-year-old Escalera, standing at 5'10 and weighting 165 pounds, became the first black to play for the Cincinnati Redlegs. He entered the game as a
    pinch hitter
, and hit a single in a 5–1 loss to the
    Atlanta Braves
    .
He played in 73 games during his only big league season, often as a pinch hitter. Season and career totals include a .159 batting average (11-for-69), 3
    runs batted in
    , 15
    runs scored
    , and an
    on base percentage
of .234. He committed just one
    error
    in 49
    total chances
    at OF/1B for a
    fielding percentage
    of .980.
Escalera worked as a scout for the
    New York Mets
organization from 1966 to 1981. In 1982, he served as a scout for the
    San Francisco Giants
organization. Among players signed by Escalera are retired major league players
    Jerry Morales
    ,
    Ed Figueroa
    ,
    Benny Ayala
    ,
    José Oquendo
    and
    Juan Berenguer
    .
Escalera is a member of the
Puerto Rico Baseball Hall Of Fame
, Rio Piedras Sport Hall of Fame, Puerto Rico Sport Hall of Fame and Santurce Sport Hall of Fame. He is considered alongside
    Victor Pellot
    and
    Orlando Cepeda
    among the best
    first basemen
    in
    Puerto Rico
    history.
    Baseball family tradition:
Escalera is the pioneer of a multigenerational tradition of Major League Baseball players, scouts and baseball managers. Escalera’s nephew Ruben Escalera, played for the
    Milwaukee Brewers
minor league organization, later became a professional baseball scout and currently is a professional baseball manager. Another nephew,
    Alfredo Escalera
    , was drafted by the
    Kansas City Royals
as the youngest player ever to be drafted by any organization.
Since our young, 100% rice and beans raised Hiram Bithorn came into the Major League Baseball, world professional baseball has seen more than 252 of our Boricua Islanders belong to its ranks, a source of endless pride for all of us Puerto Ricans, for whom Baseball is and will always be one our favorite national sports. From Bithorn to Roberto Clemente to Orlando Cepeda to Alex Rodriguez, and many others, many of our Professional Baseball players have ended as umpires, trainers, and spotters of young prospects, around Latin America, specially in the Caribbean, helping raise the bar in defining equality and ending racial and cultural prejudice against minorities, while spreading an American borne, and one of America's favorite sports of all times to the world stage, even to places like modern Japan, where Baseball is king.  This medal here is part of a 20 medal series, which will honor the first Puerto Ricans to join the MLB, many of whom already served on the extremely competitive environment of the equally prestigious Negro Leagues.
    ANVERSO / OBVERSE:
The obverse shows the image and name of the Baseball player, along with the name of the town of origin and year the player was born. The number at the top of the home town is the turn number within the roster of Puerto Ricans who have made it into the Major League Baseball. To the right of the player is a branch of olive, simbol of victory, while to the lower left of the player is a line which tells with which Major League Baseball the player made it to the MLB, whether it was with the American or National League, and the year the player made it into the MLB.
    REVERSO / REVERSE:
to all the medals of this wonderfully short and new collectable series, shows our first bilingual medal: It is in Spanish at the top, and in English at the bottom, all due to the importance of the accomplishments these players made while playing for the best American Baseball teams and their legacy left within the history of those teams, and to the cities to where the teams belong. Each reverse is flanked by two Puerto Rico flags, above which it tells about the medal series in Spanish.  Below, it reads: " Puerto Rico 2010 " and below is a baseball field, across which it says " Puerto Rican Legends (of the) Major League Baseball ".  It also states 24K GP (Gold Plate) & 1/100 (total mintage).
